The black d-pawn is no longer isolated, but instead Black is saddled with an isolated a-pawn, together with a backward c-pawn.
33.Kd3 Kd6 34.Ra5!
But not 34.Kd4?!, in view of 34...Rb8 35.Ra5 c5+! 36.Kd3 Rb6=.
34...Ra8 35.Kd4
Now Black has to watch out for the future e4-advance. It was too early for that, as after 35.e4 d×e4+ 36.K×e4 Kc7 37.Ke5 Kb6 38.b4 Re8+ Black would attack White’s kingside pawns.
35...f5 36.b4 (D)
36...Rb8?
Passive play cannot be helpful! The a6-pawn had to be defended by the king to allow the black rook to become active. So, Black had to go in for 36...Kc7! 37.Kc5 Kb7 38.Kd6 Re8 39.Ra3 (intending Rc3) and now:
(a) 39...f4? 40.e×f4 Re2 41.g4 R×h2 42.f5+− as Black cannot defend against the passed white f-pawn;
(b) 39...d4 40.e×d4 Re2 41.Rc3 R×g2 (41...Rd2 42.Rc4) 42.R×c6 R×h2 43.a4 g5 44.Rc7+! Kb6 45.Rg7 and White retains the advantage, since his passed d-pawn is quite dangerous;
(c) 39...g5! (this simple move has, for some reason, been overlooked in the endgame books) 40.Rc3 (40.g3 g4! [40...d4?! 41.e×d4 Re2 42.Ra5! h6 43.a4! (43.R×f5 R×a2 44.Rf7+ Kb6 45.Rc7 R×h2 46.R×c6+ Kb5 47.d5±) 43...Rb2 44.R×f5 R×b4 45.Kc5 R×a4 46.Rf7+±] 41.f4 [41.f×g4 f×g4 42.Rc3 Rf8=] 41...Re4 42.Rc3 Rc4=) 40...f4 41.e×f4 g×f4 42.R×c6 Rd8+ 43.Kc5 d4 44.Re6 d3 45.Re1 Rg8=.
37.a3 Ra8
The alternative was 37...Rb6, but here the black rook might even stand worse than it does on a8.
38.e4!
A seemingly illogical move but Black has only one “real” weakness on a6 and White exchanges his weak e3-pawn, activates his king and rook along the fifth rank and then sets about creating weaknesses for the opponent on the kingside. He executes a standard technique, called “enlarging the battlefield!.”
38...f×e4 39.f×e4 d×e4 40.K×e4 (D)
